Islamic fundamentalism

What is Islam?
Islam is the religion of Adam, Idris (Enoch), Nuh (Noah), Hud (Eber), Saleh (Salih), Ibrahim (Abraham), Lut (Lot), Isma’il (Ishmael), Is'haq (Isaac), Yaqub (Jacob), Yusuf (Joseph), Ayyub (Job), Shu'ayb (Jethro), Musa (Moses), Harun (Aaron), Dawud (David), Sulayman (Solomon), Ilyas (Elijah), Al-Yasa (Elisha), Yunus (Jonah), Dhul-Kifl (Ezekiel), Zakariyya (Zechariah), Yahya (John the Baptist), Isa (Jesus) and Muhammad
Islam teaches that
1- There is no god truly worthy of worship except Allah and Mohammed is his messenger and slave
2- Quran is the word of Allah, the book sent to guide the people to paradise and everything in it is true, word to word, letter to letter
3- Mohammed is the last prophet and he was sent to show and explain the true guidance and teach the people.
This is the religion that gave woman the right to live peacefully when they were buried alive and when they were inherited within the family as lifeless material. This is the religion that made studying and seeking knowledge a part of worshiping and made people wonder and study and developed. This is the religion that justly ruled from china to Spain peacefully. This is the religion that made people create surgical instruments, first had dental surgeries while in the so called “dark ages” the British and the French washed their mouth with urine to cure dental pain. This religion taught human what human rights are. To make it short those who don’t know Islam or those who have a wrong understanding of Islam due to longtime exposure to nonsense can click here to read more about “what is Islam?”
What is fundamentals, fundamentalism?
Fundamental:
1- An original or primary source
2- A basic principle, rule, law, or the like, that serves as the groundwork of a system; essential part.
So each and everything has its fundamentals, if we look at any subject, mathematics, physics, engineering, architecture etc. each of these subjects have a set of fundamentals, basic rules, primary source which cannot be changed and altered.
Fundamentalism:
Is the following of the fundamentals and calling to the origin
Later the meaning changed and was applied to the bible thumpers who called to return to it and practice the bible when the secular movement fought to gain power and corrupted the countries.
Fundamentals of Islam or the basic principles and origins of it
1- Quran
2- Ahadith (Sunnah)
These are the primary source and the basic principle of this religion so Islamic fundamentalism means following the Quran and Sunnah. There is no such thing as extreme or moderate Islam, you either practice it as it is or you’re not.
Islamic fundamentalism, extremism, western media and the deluded
The western media and the western politicians use this term in its true meaning, in their speeches when they mentioned “Islamic fundamentals” they mean those true followers of Islam (Quran & Sunnah) and they know as long as true followers of Islam are in a nation they can’t do whatever they want. To make it sound better for their public they exaggerate it a bit and say Muslims are extremists and try to convince Muslims not to follow Islam because following Quran and Sunnah will make you a fundamentalist which means you are extremists. The truth is they know if Muslims don’t follow what is in the Quran and Sunnah they are no more Muslims. Unfortunately some of us think that this is the reality and would just be “moderate” Muslims. Well Allah sent this religion as moderate as it can be. It’s neither extreme nor easy on things it’s the fair half of everything. So when you slice this better half you’re left with a Quarter of the truth and the other 75% of filth.
Muslim brothers and sisters
Maldives has suffered a long time in a dark age where not only religious studies were in a way oppressed. But during this time the youths were taught a “version” of Islam not the Islam. There are people commenting on Islam without even knowing how to read Quran and they would read a translation and ponder. People who have absolutely no idea what Islam is and thinks it is saluting “bodufenvalhuge seedee” or visiting “medhuziyarai”. My fellow brothers and sisters it’s always good to learn and listen and study rather than just comment on your religion without even knowing it, thinking you know enough.
If you believe Islam is the true religion and Allah is the Almighty and all forgiving and Mohammed is his messenger why not correctly follow it. To follow it you need to study. Before following whatever the media is saying how about you return to your books and learn and see if the man on the street and the media are correct.

Islam is undeniably a great religion. History is testimony to this fact. But!
"This is the religion that made studying and seeking knowledge a part of worshiping and made people wonder and study and developed."
For the past several centuries the Muslim world has been operating in direct contradiction to the above. Report after report and a cursory glance at the developments of the world today suggest that Muslim participation, if not entirely absent, has been nominal at best.
How do you explain that? I can make a guess at your explanation: that Muslims have diverted from the original teachings. If this is so, then is anyone surely people who are following true Islam today must be making considerable progress. If you are part of this movement, perhaps you can enlighten me on this because I have yet to find any substance to this claim today.
@ simon
Simon, if you read through the history before the fall of Ottoman Empire you would surely find great scientists and scholars and marvelous inventions invented by Muslims, there are a handful of very good documentaries from BBC and also Discovery channel about that.
Ottoman Empire lost its power cause of the leader’s lack of interest in knowledge and respect to the people of knowledge, when I say knowledge I mean all the fields not only in Shariah, and their (Ottomans) racist ideology which they took on the last few years of their Empire, they even neglected the two holy shrines (Mecca, Madina) these were where almost all the religious scholars were and also in Bagdad. Before that they have already lost their greatest scientific city with all the lovely building and research facilities, Al Andalus, after the fall of Umayyad Caliphate Spain (Al Andalus) was the first city the Abbasid Caliphate lost. The reasons are there love for worldly gain and their lack of interest in the religious teachings. But there came good caliphs during the Abbasid reign.
After the fall of Ottomans Islamic nations came to life some started to practice man made laws and even changed the Shariah, sadly have to agree most of the countries fell into a deep darkness, the great scholar Bukhari wrote his famous book of Hadith Ah sahih Al bukhari and in it he have narrated many Authentic hadiths from the companions of the prophet against grave worshiping, yet in his birth land people go around making “thavaf”, around a grave which they believe its Bukharis, the Islamic nations reached this stage, so how can they work on knowledge and develop. Sects like Khavarijs (who make each and everyone who commits an act of haram a kafir) and Shia’ (believeing Gebriel made a mistake and their leaders are also god in human flesh and all sorts of crap) and Sufis (grave worshiping and “ziyaraih” visiting) spread all over the nations. Taking people away from the true path of Allah. many scholars came teaching the people right path some were even killed, Imam Ahmed and even Imam Shafi were even severely punished for not agreeing with the Caliph Maumoon when he said Quran is not the word of Allah but a creation from Allah. When the scholars did’nt agree they were imprisoned and punished. Like that was ibn Thaimiyya, Ibn Thaimiyya is well known for his books and his answers to the lost sects.
after that the Mohammed bin wahab who was from Nagid ( near modern day Riyadh (still exists)) after studying from Mecca, Madina and Bagdad came a wrote the famous book “kithabu thuheed” calling the people to leave from grave worshiping and asking the prophet for forgiveness and to ask from Allah and Mohammed is a messenger not a god. From that point he faced several people who nearly killed him, when the founder of Saudi kingdom met him, they made an agreement that his kingdom will always but on the words of thauheed and there will be a council of scholars, from that day the kingdom Is to the family of Saud (mostly known as Aal sauds) and the head supreme council of religious affairs is runned by the eldest and most knowledgble from the ibn wahabs family, (mostly known as Aal sheikhs).
There were times when even Saudi faced destruction when American controlled the oil company “Aramco” a political issue came up and Americans threatened to take over the oil fields and it was the time of one of the greatest leader of Saudi king Faisal, that day he said the his famous words “we don’t mind our fathers lived on dates and camel milk, we can still live like that” well Faisal got killed in a very controversial attack. Yet this nation prospers not cause of its oil or the two holy shrines but cause of its love to the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of Allah’s prophet. But if you look at the situation now when they are moving away from the religion more and more problems arises, yet this is the country with the lowest crime rate and you are safe to walk even in the middle of the night with your most expensive property.
I’m 100% sure if the Maldivians return to Allah’s book and to the teachings of the prophet we’d be much better than these Arabs.
Our fathers was also religious and far from what we are, and there are proof to that, insha Allah will write it down in detail later, even now this is too long for a comment.

The fact that some of the people on that list had contributed to science has nothing to do with them being muslim or any other......
there is nothing useful, anyone can learn from the Quran...or Islam.
the cult seems to be aimed at perverts....its based on sex and violence (thats why it sells)... Islam promotes child abuse, slavery, murder, rape, war.....also takes away human ability to think rational....
"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live.
A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.
Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities, but the influence of the religion paralyzes the social development of those who follow it.
No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome." -Winston Churchill
lord hexter:
Good post. But some observations:
- Early muslims made great strides precisely because they were left more or less free to pursue knowledge without getting bogged down by state mandated religious/cultural/ideological restrictions. Philosophy, science, mathematics require that you keep an open mind. Europe was in dark ages because state/religion stifled critical thinking. Current muslims can only prosper if this state/islam mix leaves the researchers free to pursue without ideological restrictions.
- If by the political problem of Aramco you mean when SA threatened to nationalise the oil industry, then later backed down, that was during King Saud time, not Faisal's i think.
- I don't think we should adopt saudi form of governance, where national politics is a matter of power struggle within the family. With politically motivated fatwas (such as during the power struggle between faisal and his brother) giving religious backing to dictatorial rulers, they become oppressive. This can be seen in almost all self-styled islamic states. And wasnt faisal killed by his brother or something?
- What is so Islamic about amassing immense personal wealth to the prince and princesses by using the wealth of the country? The wealth of the country is certainly not personal property of the Royal Family, is it? The centrally-planned economy is only surviving because of the immense revenue from oil. There is so much to distribute even after pocketing a lot. If it wasnt for the oil, it would be like the former USSR or the current North Korea.
I am well aware of the list of preeminent Islamic scientists/philosophers that you have provided.
A look at the above list will reveal that these great thinkers lived several centuries ago - most even prior to the Ottoman times. When I said "the past several centuries", I was referring to the more recent centuries - through which the advancement in science and philosophy in the Muslim world had been progressively in the decline.
You would be hardpressed to find a list of contemporary Muslim scientists and philosophers of even marginally comparable calibre.
Furthermore, much of the personalities listed lived prior to the Ottoman empire. Certainly greats like Avicenna, Averroes, Omar Khayyam and even Al-Ghazali and Biruni. And what is most striking from your comment is how you have attributed the rise of Sufism after the fall of Ottoman empire as a possible reason for the decline of Islamic progress in science and philosophy. This, when (to my knowledge) Omar Khayyam and Rumi (from your own list) were most definitely Sufis.
Then you mentioned the arrival of Abd-al-Wahab who was an "Islamic" scholar who, like Ibn Taymiyya sought to return Islam to the sources.
To summarize this history; in a time before the Ottoman empire great Islamic thinkers were discovering and inventing and transforming the world. This continued into the Ottoman empire until its fall. During this time different schools of thought, theological and ideological were flourishing together well. Freethinking, and free exchange of ideas, mutual appreciation of ideologies alongside the Islamic faith were the foundations of this progress.
Then, a return to the sources seems to have stopped Islamic progress in the sciences, philosophy and art dead in its tracks.
And that is unfortunately where we are today.
Here is Biruni's areas of work as quoted in Wikipedia: "He was a scientist and physicist, an anthropologist and comparative sociologist, an astronomer and chemist, a critic of alchemy and astrology, an encyclopedist and historian, a geographer and traveler, a geodesist and geologist, a mathematician, a pharmacist and psychologist, an Islamic philosopher and theologian, and an scholar and teacher."
Absolutely one of the greatest Islamic thinkers and scientists and he lived over a 1,000 years ago.
Today, all that the Muslim world is left with are preachers and showmen who contribute little, if not nothing, to the progress of knowledge. All they seem to do, like you, is daydream about a time of centuries ago.
Today's Muslims must hang their heads in shame.
@staranger
Apart of the bollocks of Churchill you’ve brought, you haven’t made a single point reasonable and the history of the world proves it unless you’re blind. If you don’t have any proper reasoning you may not spit out your bollocks and fouls here. Thank you
@meekaaku
Thank you for the correction it was Saud, my mistake
Regarding the development of intellect, if you remember the Bedouins and the nomads of Arabia they lived between two great empires Rome was there Persia was also there but they never got the idea until Islam introduced them the benefits of studying. When we say Islam we believe that it was the religion of all the prophets and those who believed in Isa (Jesus) in the time of Jesus as he brought it we believe would be in paradise, in that understanding the nations before Mohammed prospered cause of the blessing of Allah through the teachings of Allah’s prophets. It would be easy to understand if we don’t narrow our view on it.
Not to about nationalizing Aramco, there were regional political issues like the Palestine problem, even after this incident there came a time the KSA stopped the oil production and export for 20 days, even the Americans believed they had a rough economy cause of that 20 days.
Regarding the change of power to Faisal, his brother was not very much a leader you can be sure of it even the visiting officials of the countries said “he likes to be the king, and his tent in the desert have all the food from around the world, he would spent most of the time in there” not only that the time he went to visit the American forces in KSA the soldiers found dozens of vodka in his plane, there were instructed to take them to his quarters. These issues forced his brothers to take control and he was allowed to leave, he left to Greece. Faisal was killed by a nephew who studied and lived in America (which gave birth to many theories) he shot Faisal in the head during a meeting. He was given a death sentence. The motive was his (Faisal’s nephews) brother was before found guilty of killing a guard at a TV station, when there were going on a riot and the guard was shot while he tried to stop them from entering the place.
I’m not suggesting a Saudi way of government for Maldives, and there are lots of problems in the kingdom too. All I’m saying is if we implement Shariah and practice Islam as it is, not in a narrow point of understanding which some countries did. We’d be much better and our crime rates won’t be jumping about, and our youths would be more responsible.
@ simon
As I said before from the start till a certain time it was great, and during the Ottoman Empire sects immerged and everything were falling apart. The list of scholars, I listed them to give you an idea of what Muslims have done it the fields, fortunately your aware of it, and what you have pointed out about the scholars of the time of Ottoman being sufis give evidence to my statement.
Not the return to the source has stopped the development the argument and misunderstanding between the sects have not ended the scholars now are trying to teach the people what the true path is. We have even in our small society, youths who love Islam and returning to it as suddenly you find him extreme and calling others Kufars even without knowledge. I’ve seen Maldivian youths who call other simple Maldivians Kafirs, who do some things which may be wrong in Islam, but they do it not knowing its wrong, but these youths, who can’t even read Quran, would call others Kufars. So the scholars are busy trying to teach them what the true Islam is.
Sadly have to agree with you, Muslims must hang their heads in shame for what they have been and how far they are form the true guidance. And strive to come back to it.
When the muslims were loosing power in europe, many scientific scriptures were stolen from them.
anon@2:52-
Yes lots of things were stolen, and europe gained lots from the sciences and philosophy developed by the muslims. But the sad thing is, europe adopted what was good and useful to them from muslims and continued the search for knowledge. For some reasons the muslims stagnated. And if someone tries to adopt something from the west (some of which has its origin from the muslims), they will be labelled an apostate or something.
To give you an example, Ibn Rushd's (as in lordhexter's list), writings and thoughts on the use of Reason as the foundation of knowledge formed the very roots of the Enlightenment movement in europe, which brought freedom of expression, reason, liberty, democracy. Italian and German kings ordered his books be translated. Now today we see lots of muslims take it to the streets to protest freedom, liberty and democracy. Why?
lordhexter:
I agree, muslims have lost their way, and we have to get back to the roots. Sadly, the self styled true-islam preachers fare no better, and as simon said muslims are not making considerable progress.
@ Simon, stranger, meekaku
Interesting reading all this. I wonder who simon, stranger and meekaku considers forward thinking, enlightened and worthy of taking note in the modern world?
@ Lord Hexter
May Allah Give you the courage and wisdom to carry on in this striving of yours. I praise Allah that you have given me so much to ponder about. May Allah Bless you.
In my opinion Islam down the ages always freed man from the shackles of ignorance. It engendered in people who followed its recommendations ( both consciously and unconsciously) & imbibed its ethos (again consciously or unconsciously), awareness of all that surrounds them and were moved in different ways. In some it sparked off the brilliance and gushing out of sheer genius through all ages from East to West & North and South which powered human development right up to our age.
Similarly those who rejected or failed to follow the principles and tenets of this great way of life descended into multifarious shades of exploitation and barbarity of fellow human beings and one’s surroundings. The key thus is following the principles and ethos of Islam, irrespective of doing so consciously or not.
Islamic precepts, its principles, its guidelines, & its ethos were revelation from an all Merciful God unto His creation that began from the beginning of time. Wherever it is allowed to work its potential ….... out; would sprout goodness and brilliance for all to behold. Its indeed evidence of an All Merciful God Who showers his blessings on ALL His creatures.
Believer or non-believer, whoever follows these fundamentals of Islam; one way or another, in one degree or another, knowingly or unknowingly, surely would reap the harvest of Allah’s Goodness, Allah’s mercy.
Weather you know you are breathing oxygen or not, IF YOU BREATH OXYGEN, IT SURELY gives what oxygen would give living beings. If you don’t breath oxygen, knowingly or otherwise you would surely wither and die. In some before death one would be convulsed, distorted, perhaps take on an eerie blue tinge, and then run into spasms and … then die. A HORRBLE DEATH.
May Allah Guide us all. Amin.
